A crime on the other hand is considered to be a wrong committed against society as a whole.

The difference between tort and crime is that a tort causes damage to an individual whereas a crime damages the conscience of the society at large. How torts and crimes are different. A tort differs from a crime because although it is a wrong doing it is classified as a civil offense.

Whereas the remedy for a tort is a civil lawsuit crimes are redressed through criminal prosecution by the state of the offender. While it can sometimes be easy to tell the difference between a crime and a tort some actions fall into a gray area.
