A group or family is the vertical columns on the periodic table of the elements.
The columns of the periodic table are often used to define families. Both describe elements that share common properties usually based on the number of valence electrons. In chemistry a family is a group of elements with similar chemical properties. Periodic table in chemistry the organized array of all the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number.
