What Happens To Those Who Never Hear The Gospel
Camila Farah
God s plan of salvation revealed in scripture is quite different from what most christians believe.
One person once asked me what happens to the innocent aborigine deep in the jungle who never had a chance to hear the gospel. Someone who never hears and rejects the gospel has sinned in other ways thus causing hell to be a just sentence. Your view of missions for example in terms of both its nature and its urgency will be directly shaped by your view of the man on the island s fate. If we assume that those who never hear the gospel are granted mercy from god we will run into a terrible problem.
The question concerning the fate of those who have never heard the gospel is a perennial one. However in the church age inaugurated on the day of pentecost in the first century. If people who never hear the gospel are saved it is logical that we should make sure no one ever hears the gospel. If it is the case that those who never hear the gospel will be saved in their sinful condition simply because they do not know the truth would it not be better to leave them in that state of ignorance.
It s practically relevant and eternally serious. The question of what happens to those who have never heard of christ is an interesting one to explore. The question isn t some vague theological abstraction. It is practically relevant and eternally serious.

Being saved without knowing the gospel is unbiblical but it is also illogical if people went to heaven because they never heard the gospel the cruelest thing you could do would be to share the gospel. God will resurrect them to physical life and give them the opportunity to believe and inherit eternal life. Because if they are exposed to the truth and then reject it there is little controversy as to what their fate will be. So what happens to those who never hear the gospel.
Your view of the missionary task for example both in terms of its nature and its urgency will be directly affected by your view of the man on the island s everlasting fate. It doesn t seem fair to condemn those to hell who have never heard the gospel. My reaction is that no human is innocent for we have all sinned and fallen short of god s glory and standard of holiness rom 3 23. Furthermore it could be that those who have never heard the gospel of jesus christ will go to hell.
Acts 2 the name and gospel of christ are known and it is through the preaching and knowledge of christ s gospel that people are saved today.
