What Angle To Cut Wood To Make A Hexagon
Olivia Luz
You just need to cut a sixty degree angle on each of the pieces.
Set the angle as accurate as you can. This rule can be achieved by using six different pieces of woods. These will come together to fit in and create a hexagon form. Set the bevel on the miter saw to 30 degrees.
Cutting a 60 degree angle on each end of all six pieces results in six pieces of wood that will fit together and form a hexagon. Use a straightedge to bisect or cut in half the corner diagonally. So to form a hexagon you will need to miter each piece at a 60 degree angle. A 30 60 90 degree drafting triangle might help.
The mitered board should look like this after making cuts at both. Start by calculating the angle for the bevel cut on the miter saw. Set the saw to cut 30 degree miters. Each angle is 120 degrees and the sum of the angles is 720 degrees.

Each angle of this shape comes with 120 degrees of measure. You could use a table saw with a miter gauge a band saw miter saw and so on. If you have some mathematical geometry knowledge you would also know that every hexagon has an angle of 60 degrees. A hexagon has six sides and six corresponding angles.

The miter will cut the end of the board at an angle. If you cut all six boards at 60 degree angles you can create a hexagon which is analogous to a circular form.

When you want to batch out several hexagons and make them all the exact same it can get tricky. Now after cutting all the pieces of scrap you need to miter these pieces at the desired angle to form a hexagon. Make a model by placing two similar pieces of scrap wood on the drawing. So if you have a 90 degree corner you ll cut it in half with a line drawn with a straightedge to get two 45 degree miter angles.
