What Is The Difference Between Convergent And Divergent Evolution
Olivia Luz
The main difference between convergent evolution and divergent evolution is that convergent evolution is the development of similar features in two species with different ancestral origins whereas divergent evolution is a process where two different species share a common ancestor.
Convergent evolution is the process where two or different species develop similar traits in spite having the different ancestor. Convergent evolution shows how species have evolved separately but have similar analogous structures. While divergent evolution is rising to new species which may be identical in function but morphologically disparate from their ancestors. An example is wings of birds bats insects whereas divergent evolution gives rise to new species which may be similar in function but morphologically different from their ancestors.
Three main differences between convergent and divergent evolution are. Difference between convergent and divergent evolution. Divergent evolution demonstrates how species can have common anatomical structures which have evolved for different purposes. Divergence makes sense only in the light of gradualism.
A type of evolution in which organisms are thought to have the same ancestor but separated over time. Convergent evolution a type of evolution in which organisms are of different lineages but have the same traits. The essence of evolution is that it is slow gradual. If evolution were to take place in leaps and bounds there could arise a situation where divergence would in fact lead to convergence.

When different species evolve similarities in their characteristics and functions due to the adaptation to a particular environment. When an ancestral species diverges into multiple different species ultimately giving rise to new species. Moreover a further difference between convergent and divergent evolution is that the convergent evolution is a result of organisms living under similar environmental conditions while the divergent evolution is a result of organisms living in different environments and conditions.
