The easiest way to distinguish monkeys from the other anthropoids is to look for a tail. For much of history people have used the terms monkey and ape interchangeably. Primates are omnivorous meaning they eat both plants and animals.

Monkeys are generally smaller and narrow chested while apes are larger and have broad chests and shoulder joints that allow them to swing through trees while some monkeys also have this ability most of them are built for running across branches rather than swinging. Some of the differences in monkeys and apes are. Take for example the barbary macaque considered to be a monkey these animals are in fact tailless. Apes and monkeys mostly eat fruits leaves and other plant material but they will also eat insects eggs and sometimes meat. In fact many people today will refer to apes as monkeys and vice versa.

The size of the brain mental capabilities and the lifespan of monkey and ape may also possess significant differences. Apes don t have tails whereas monkeys do though there are exceptions to this supposed rule. Most monkey species have tails but no apes or hominids do.
