What Is The Difference Between A Biome And An Ecosystem
Camila Farah
The key difference between ecosystem and biome is a biome has to do with the abiotic environment climate territory geology while an ecosystem involves the biotic element animals organisms flora.
Tropical rainforests grasslands and deserts are examples of biomes. In contrast the word biome is used for visually similar but not necessarily connected areas. A biome occupies a particular scale while ecosystems can be defined on multiple levels of space and time folding into one another as perspective broadens to encompass the planet as a whole. Unlike an ecosystem a biome is strongly influenced by its physical factors such as climatic conditions such as snow temperature rainfall etc.
The biome is a higher category comprising a set of ecosystems. An ecosystem can be large or small. But an ecosystem is not. A biome is also influenced by latitude which an ecosystem is independent of.
The main difference between biome and ecosystem is that biome represents a broader geographical area whereas ecosystem represents a small collection of species that live in a small geographical area. An ecosystem is smaller than a biome because a biome is distributed throughout the earth. A biome is a large biotic unit that consists of vegetation and animal life that has developed in response to abiotic factors of precipitation temperature and latitude. Two similar ecosystems are considered as two similar ecosystems rather than one ecosystem unless the land in between them is also included.
