The mucus plug thins and falls out in response to a rise in estrogen as well as pressure from the baby s head pushing on the cervix as labor approaches. Seeing the mucus plug is a sign you are approaching labor or it can be an early sign of labor itself. The mucus plug is a clear sticky gelatinous glob of mucus.
