If you have a white coating on the entire tongue it s likely due to inflamed papillae caused by a buildup of bacteria debris fungus and dead cells. On a basic level your tongue looks white because the papillae fleshy raised portions of tissue lining your tongue have become swollen for some reason. This coating can cover the entire surface of your tongue the back part of your tongue or it might show up in patches. You might also notice a bad taste in your mouth bad breath or redness.
