If you see green or yellow phlegm it s usually a sign that your body is fighting an infection. At first you may notice yellow phlegm that then progresses. Red or pink mucus whether you keep blowing or rubbing your nose or you fall face first onto it blood is the primary reason your mucus can turn red or pink. If your immune system kicks into high gear to fight infection your snot may turn green and become especially thick.
Green thick snot means your body is fighting a hard battle and even more depleted immune cells and waste products are being flushed out. The color comes from white blood cells. The yellow color comes from dead white blood cells which can turn green if there are a lot of white blood cells and other debris. A general rule of infection warning and sputum production is that the colour will go from dark green in the early stages of an infection and will gradually lighten as the infection improves.
