What Did You Want To Be When You Grew Up
Camila Farah
As a child many of you probably had wild dreams of what you wanted to be when you grew up.
Perhaps you wanted to be an astronaut having been inspired by the moon landings or maybe you hoped to become a footballer spurred on by a sporting triumph. Maybe the piece of paper you wrote when you were 10 years old that starts with something along the lines of when i grow up i want to be i ll take odds that 90 of you remember doing this at some point. As you can see there is some overlap between what people wanted to be when they grew up and what they want to be now. I think we can put a pretty solid check beside that desire since one can t really guarantee that path in life though i did spend childhood teen years thinking about job options too.
We just got back from keynoting at thrive conference and after talking all about how we got to where we are this topic was on my brain. And it makes sense because many of the overlapping careers like nurse are solid choices for a first or even second career. At first i thought i would want to be a music major. I mainly remember wanting to grow up get married have children and run a household.
I kid you not. You have to understand that i was a kid in the 60s so i wanted to do things girls just didn t couldn t do. My black uncle once pulled me aside after and said bro that doesn t pay well at all 2 2. I know one thing is for sure if you were to randomly sample 1000 people asking them what they wanted to be when they grew up career counselor likely wouldn t make the top five.
