If The Universe Is Expanding What Is It Expanding Into
Camila Farah
The short answer is that this is a nonsense question the universe isn t expanding into anything it s just expanding.
Here s the short answer. As a case in point not all galaxies are moving away. The expanding universe is due to gravity which means that in regions of high density the dominant gravitational effects are entirely local. Instead what is happening is that every region of the universe every distance between every pair of galaxies is being stretched but the overall size of the universe was infinitely big to begin with and continues to remain infinitely big as time goes on so the universe s size doesn t change and therefore it doesn t expand into.
However if you just want a short answer i ll say this. The analogy implies that there s a surrounding space a third dimension into which the bug universe expands. The universe can expand without there being anything outside it for it to expand into says science writer and astrophysicist adam becker. That model universe is two dimensional but in our mind s eye we immediately think of it expanding into a third dimension a dimension that the ants can t access because they can t jump.
If the universe is infinitely big then the answer is simply that it isn t expanding into anything. The universe doesn t need to be expanding into anything greater than itself. The universe is everything so it isn t expanding into anything. It may simply be expanding because that s what space does in general relativity.

The definition of the universe is that it contains everything. Also the bug universe is curved. That question doesn t make sense.
